New Jersey’s Got Talent Too!

Posted on: May 4th, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

America’s Got Talent has selected the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark as its host venue for its 2012 season beginning this week. The popular reality television series begins its 7th season May 14th and 15th, with shock radio personality Howard Stern replacing Piers Morgan. The Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark is one of the largest art centers in the country and expects to have over 2200 fans in attendance for each taped show.

After the premier, the show will be broadcast on Mondays at 8 PM and Tuesdays at 9 PM on NBC beginning May 21st, with live tapings to begin July 2nd at the Performing Arts Center for the second half of the series. Sharon Osborne and Howie Mandel return as the other judges, Nick Cannon returns as the host and Simon Cowell remains the executive producer for the highly ranked program that was #1 in its time slot for each of its previous six years while averaging 12 million viewers per show last season.

With the addition of Howard Stern, who is one the most powerful celebrities in the world today, the show moves from Burbank, California to the east coast. The move was necessitated by Stern’s contractual obligations to his radio program on Sirius XM in Manhattan. Howard Stern has long been the source of controversy and has been fined millions of dollars by the FCC for what has been deemed indecent material during his many years in talk radio. But by bringing him on as one of the three judges for America’s Got Talent, it’s all but certain to maintain its stranglehold on the #1 position of its time slot, especially since Stern already has tremendous fan appeal. However it will be quite interesting to see how well Stern meshes in with the group of auditioners, the audience and associates on the show, given his fiery personality.

The talent show will once again feature a variety of performers including singing and dancing acts, magicians, comedians, contortionists, jugglers and perhaps even another ventriloquist similar to the winner of Season 2, Terry Fator. The 2012 winner of the show will receive the top prize of $1 million along with the national exposure for a career in entertainment.

Anticipation is building for the beginning of the new season and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center is extremely proud to be the host venue for what is expected to be yet another memorable season of competition and entertainment amongst America’s emerging pool of talent. Even prouder is the City of Newark, which will get an economic boost for fans coming to the city in anticipation of being in the audience of one of America’s most popular television shows and cheering on their personal favorite.

If you are planning on going to the tapings, give us a call and we will get you there with no stress or hassle of parking.

No Fantasy Football Draft Here…It’s the REAL McCoy!

Posted on: April 21st, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

Football fans can soon ignore the many rumors and mock drafts because the real event is coming soon to New York City. The 77th annual NFL draft is scheduled for April 26th-28th at Radio City Music Hall in Rockefeller Center. If you are an executive or a staff member of an NFL or college team, you can ride to the venue in luxury by taking the best limo service in New Jersey, Royal Coachman.

The annual draft of the nation’s top college football players is performed in reverse order of each teams’ previous record. By virtue of the New York Giants’ stunning victory in Super Bowl LXVI over the New England Patriots, this makes the Giants the recipient of the last pick of the first round of 30 picks. In contrast, the team with the worst record last season, the Indianapolis Colts, selects #1 in the first round.

With the first pick, the Colts are expected to draft the most highly rated player in the draft, in this case, Stanford University’s quarterback Andrew Luck. However the very next player expected to be drafted, quarterback Robert Griffin III of Baylor is equally a highly touted player and the team who possesses the #2 position is New York Giants rival, the Washington Redskins who gained the pick via a trade with the St. Louis Rams.

After the NFL and college football seasons are over, fans have taken to the many social media platforms to analyze, dissect and predict what college players will be picked in the first round and all have high expectations of who their favorite team will select. But just because a player was highly regarded in college, doesn’t necessarily translate well into the professional ranks.  Of course there have been game changing superstars that have been drafted #1 overall in the first round: John Elway in 1983, Troy Aikman in 1989, Peyton Manning in 1998, and Eli Manning in 2004, who all led their teams to Super Bowl victories.

But there have been a lot of college players that went bust when they reached the pros. Take for example JaMarcus Russell,  the #1 overall pick in 2007. The Louisiana State University quarterback who went 21-4 as a starter in college, was drafted by the hapless Oakland Raiders, then held out for more money until he received a $61 million contract, $32 million which was guaranteed money. After just three seasons with the Raiders, Russell went 7-18 as the starter and is now out of professional football. Another starting example of a draft bust is Ryan Leaf, who played college ball at Washington State University. Leaf was so highly regarded that he was the #2 overall pick in the first round of the 1998 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. Beset with injuries, poor performance and personal problems, Leaf was out of professional football. Just recently, Ryan Leaf made the news again, only in a far less positive light. Less than a month ago, he was arrested on burglary, theft and drug charges, not once, but twice in a span of 4 days.

Thus, each of the 30 teams of the NFL is well aware of the risks involved in their selection, which makes the evaluation process a state of the art science. But hope springs eternal for each of the teams as they dream of securing the next Joe Montana, who wasn’t picked until the end of the 3rd round in 1979 or a Tom Brady, who wasn’t picked until the 6th round of the 2000 draft.

The excitement is building for both fans and their respective team’s organizational staff. Many visitors know they won’t get a bust in selecting a New Jersey limo service by choosing Royal Coachman as their #1 chauffeured limousine and ground transportation service!

We Have An Empire State of Mind for the Playoffs!

Posted on: April 16th, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

The end of the regular season for the NBA is fast approaching and if the New York Knicks maintain their current position, they’ll make the playoffs. The Knicks currently reside in the last remaining spot in the Eastern Conference for the playoffs and barring any unforeseen event, they’ll face the top seeded Chicago Bulls in the first round. If the Knicks do make it to the playoffs, you can see them in style by using limo service from Royal Coachman to Madison Square Garden.

It is safe to say that it’s been a disappointing season for the Knicks, what with all the talent the team has. With three starting players earning nearly a combined $50 million, your expectations are much higher than finishing at just .500. Granted the team has had its share of extended injuries to key players like Carmelo Anthony, Baron Davis, new mega-marketing whiz kid Jeremy Lin, and perhaps their most important player, Amare Stoudemire still on the injured list with a bulging disk. While the 6’10” Stoudemire is expected to return, it isn’t yet clear if Jeremy Lin will return after having surgery for a torn meniscus earlier this month.

One of the few positives in looking back at this season, has been the emergence of young point guard Jeremy Lin, who practically became an overnight worldwide sensation. Being one of the few Asian players to ever play professional basketball in the NBA, Lin’s incredible popularity coined a new word – Linsanity and fans across the country caught on to a hyper-speed bevy of activity via social media.

When the season ends and playoff matches are announced, New Yorkers are quietly hoping for an upset, that is, of course, if they make it to the first round. As it is usually understood in sports, once the playoffs begin, anything can occur. If the Knicks play the Bulls, Chicago fans can rely on Royal Coachman’s limo service from Newark International Airport to anywhere in the New Jersey/New York City area. For Knicks fans, why not rent a limo to the home games at The Garden?

The Iconic Chrysler Building

Posted on: March 22nd, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

The Chrysler Building is iconic to New York City. In fact, it is one of the biggest examples of Art Deco** architecture in the United States. In 2005 it was voted by New York’s Skyscraper Museum as New Yorkers’ favorite tower in the City. The building itself is 77 floors and 319.5m (1048 feet) high. It is built with 29961 tons of steel, 3,826,000 bricks and has near 5000 windows. The cost to build this magnificent structure in in the late 1920’s was $20,000,000. The decorative features of the building were designed after the ornamental features on Chrysler cars. The eagles on the corners of the 21st floor were taken from the eagle hood ornaments on the 1929 Chrysler model car.

If you have never seen the Chrysler Building read this wonderful description of just the 3 story high lobby as so eloquently put at nyc-architecture.com…

“The three stories high, upwards tapering entrance lobby has a triangular form, with entrances from three sides, Lexington Avenue, 42nd and 43rd Streets. The lobby is lavishly decorated with Red Moroccan marble walls, sienna-coloured floor and onyx, blue marble and steel in Art Deco compositions. The ceiling murals, painted by Edward Trumbull, praise the modern-day technical progress — and of course the building itself and its builders at work. The lobby was refurbished in 1978 by JCS Design Assocs. and Joseph Pell Lombardi.”

So how are you on your Chrysler Building trivia? Next time it comes up in conversation here is an interesting fact. The 27-ton spire on top of the building took just 90 minutes to erect and the final height of the building was kept secret until the end. Chrysler was in a race to build the tallest building in the city. When it looked like the Bank of Manhattan was going to win, Chrysler had the spire built in secret inside the building and then had the spire added to the Chrysler Building. It held the record as the tallest building in the world for 11 months until the Empire State Building took the title. The Empire State Building was being built by Chryslers competition John Raskob of general motors. Raskob’s architects did some figuring and decided to make the Empire State Building 85 stories tall (eight stories taller than the Chrysler Building.) It was then that the Chrysler Building was bumped to the second-tallest building in the city. Special thanks to www.mentalfloss.com  and www.jazzhostels.com  for this bit of trivia!

Next time you’re in the area make sure to stop and look at this marvel.

Aside from its usage for official duties it is also home to a number of exhibits visitors to the area can enjoy for free. The Visitors Lobby features photographic, art, and multimedia presentations by world-renowned photographers, artists and global institutions on diverse topics such as human rights, climate change, malaria, children in armed conflict, and more. The galleries can be viewed daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors’ entrance closes at 4:45 p.m.

The massive grounds may not be accessible to everyone but there is a terrific guided tour that is unforgettable. They have a Speakers Bureau with staff members of various expertise that can educate those who are interested on the latest issues and the UN Agenda. If you are planning a visit a request can be put in for a lecture, and if you are not in the area video-conference options are available as well.

Fore! Royal Coachman’s Recommendations for Golfing in New Jersey

Posted on: February 24th, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

Did you know that New Jersey is home to 360 golf courses, the host area of PGA tour tournaments and Amateur tournaments as well? In June the Neshanic Valley Golf Course will be hosting the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. This is the first time the championship tournament has come to Neshanic Valley, a course that was opened in 2004 and has only hosted the golf tournament’s qualifiers.

What does it take to prepare for the expected 156 golfers and influx of several thousand spectators? One of the first items on the agenda is the construction of a 44-foot-long scoreboard and the planning of needed adjustments to the Branchburg golf course once the weather gets warm. Driving ranges have also been covered with tarps to promote better and earlier grass growth.

This tournament is one of 13 USGA national championships that are held annually, and was created in 1977 for public-course players. In order to qualify women must advance through qualifying matches and hold a USGA Handicap Index of 18.4 or lower. Past winners include professional players Michelle Wie and Jody Niemann-Dansie. For more information on the tournament you can visit http://www.usga.org/ChampEventSite.aspx?id=17179869344

The Somerset area will make its mark on the map as a sporty place to be to the expected influx of tourists. The county itself is even fine-tuning a network of shuttle buses that will transport players and spectators. Whether you just live in the area, are a golf player who is interested in playing or like to take a spectator stand this promises to be an unforgettable year for the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.

Give Royal Coachman a call to arrange car service transport to and from the best golf courses in our region!

All About Lady Liberty: The Statue of Liberty

Posted on: February 3rd, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

She stands in the harbor overlooking the great expanse many of our families saw for the first time when they first came to the United States of America. The statue was completed in Paris in June 1884, given to the American people on July 4, 1884, and reassembled and dedicated in the United States on October 28, 1886. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom and promise. But what do you really know about the statue itself?

Here are some useful facts next time conversation heads in her direction.

Her Size (In a case like this it’s ok to ask her size without getting in any trouble.):

  • Her total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches.
  • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches.
  • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall.
  • There are 192 steps from the ground to the top of the pedestal and 354 steps from the pedestal to the crown.
  • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23′ 7″ tall and 13′ 7″ wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776)
  • Lady Liberty’s eyes are each 2 feet 6 inches across, she has a 35-foot waistline, and she weighs about 450,000 pounds (225 tons).
  • The statue’s hand is 16 feet 5 inches long and her index finger is 8 feet long. Her fingernails are 13 inches long by 10 inches wide and weigh approximately 3.5 pounds each.
  • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline.
  • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds.
  • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds).
  • Lady Liberty’s sandals are 25 feet long, making her shoe size 879.
  • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny.
  • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold.
  • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

Other Miscellaneous Facts to Note:

  • The statue functioned as an actual lighthouse from 1886 to 1902. There was an electric plant on the island to generate power for the light, which could be seen 24 miles away.
  • The Statue of Liberty underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in the mid-1980s before being rededicated on July 4, 1986. During the renovation, Lady Liberty received a new torch because the old one was corroded beyond repair.
  • The statue’s real name is “Liberty Enlightening the World.”

The best way to see the Statue of Liberty is if Royal Coachman drops you off and picks you up, as traffic and parking in the downtown area is especially tricky.  Give us a call and we’ll arrange your stress-free, fun trip!

Groundhog Day is Coming….

Posted on: January 27th, 2012 by royalcoachmanww No Comments

February 2nd brings us to one of the most important days of winter…Groundhog Day. The legend of Groundhog Day is actually based on an old Scottish couplet which states: “If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year.” On this day groundhogs everywhere are awoken from there slumber to see what we could expect. Six more weeks of winter or is it waning in its presence early to all our delights? The most famous of all grounddogs is Punxsutawney Phil. If you don’t know much about Phil check out the movie “Groundhog Day”. It does a good job in educating us all (while giving us a good laugh). If you haven’t seen it put it on your list.

With that in mind, we will have our own local groundhog awakening on February 2nd right here on Staten Island. The famous Staten Island Chuck is planned to make his official prediction. He resides in the Staten Island Zoo, and it scheduled to make his prediction at 7:30 a.m. What do you think he is going to say? Either way, the ceremony is free to attend, and there will be an optional Breakfast with Staten Island Chuck ($10/adult, $5/child) and a blood drive. Pre-registration is recommended for breakfast; call 718-442-3101 x14 to reserve. Full details are available on the Staten Island Zoo web site.  Come celebrate this yearly tradition!  We can get you there without any stress!
