Fun Things to Do in New Jersey: 5 Stops That Might Surprise You

New Jersey gets reduced to the Shore far too easily.

Look past the obvious, and things get stranger. You can walk through a zinc mine where minerals glow under ultraviolet light, stand above sharks on an 81-foot bridge, watch four wolf packs from a wooded deck, wander among sculptures larger than you are, or climb through a battleship.

These five earned their spots for one reason: each gives you something specific to do, not just another scenic stop.

Pick by the Story You Want to Tell Later

1. Go Underground at Sterling Hill Mining Museum

Ogdensburg | Give it: about 2 hours | Bring: a light layer

Sterling Hill’s main draw isn’t something behind glass: the guided visit takes you underground into a former zinc mine.

The site in Ogdensburg runs guided tours through the mine and two museums, sending you along a quarter-mile of first-level tunnel. Old working areas and equipment make geology feel far more tangible than glass cases.

Find the Rainbow Tunnel

Sterling Hill sits in a district famous for fluorescence. Under ultraviolet light, sections of the Rainbow Tunnel glow in striking colors.

  • Why it stays with you: It is one of those rare sights a photograph tends to undersell.
  • Worth knowing: You cannot explore the mine on your own. The mine and museums require a guided tour. Tour times shift by season, so verify the museum’s posted schedule first. The mine holds around 56°F, so take the sweatshirt recommendation seriously even in July.
  • Extra idea: Mineral collecting and sluicing add a hands-on option before or after the tour. The museum steers children toward sluicing rather than the mine-run dump.

2. Stand in the Middle of Four Wolf Packs

Columbia | Reserve first | Best for: wildlife fans

Lakota Wolf Preserve is not a zoo visit with wolves on the map.

You enter an observation area surrounded by four wolf packs in wooded habitats, while a guide talks through pack behavior, eating habits, and the social relationships in front of you. The visit continues with the preserve’s foxes, bobcat, and lynx.

That focused format earns Lakota its place. You come to watch and learn rather than rush between unrelated exhibits.

Know This Before Heading Out

You need a reservation on weekdays, and the guided tour is the only way to see the wolves. Lakota is not an all-day walk-in stop, so check availability before building the day around it.

Once there, you reach the preserve on a half-mile nature walk or by shuttle bus. Leave pets at home too, since you cannot keep one in the vehicle during the tour.

Why it surprises: New Jersey is probably not where you’d picture spending an afternoon watching four wolf packs from a wooded deck near the Delaware Water Gap.

3. Walk Inches Above Sharks in Camden

Camden | Pick it for: the Shark Bridge

Adventure Aquarium has plenty to see, but one experience earns its spot here. The Shark Bridge stretches 81 feet above a 550,000-gallon Shark Realm, putting you inches over sandbar, sand tiger, and nurse sharks. Adventure Aquarium describes it as the world’s longest V-shaped suspension bridge, and access currently comes with general admission.

Why it’s a thrill: The proposition is simple. Sharks below, narrow bridge above, you cross it.

Don’t Treat the Bridge as a Photo Prop

Watch the water as you cross. The height gives you an angle on the animals you never get beside a conventional tank. The crossing involves stairs, ladders, and slopes, so check the accessibility guidance if anyone in your party may find those difficult.

Once you are down by the water in Camden, there is no reason to rush away. If you don’t want a second ticket, plenty of no-cost activities can fill the afternoon, starting with a walk along the waterfront.

4. Climb Through a Battleship Instead of Looking at One

Camden waterfront | Give it: 90 minutes or more | Best paired with: Adventure Aquarium

Across the waterfront sits something much larger than another museum gallery.

Battleship New Jersey currently offers self-guided and guided access aboard the ship, taking you through the Navigational Bridge, Admiral’s Cabin, Wardroom, and former berthing areas. Guided visits run about 90 minutes. You are not onshore reading about the ship. You move through working and living spaces aboard the ship rather than viewing everything from behind museum barriers.

Want the Stranger Version?

Verify the specialty programs before choosing your date. The Battleship currently advertises turret and engine-room tours, plus overnight encampments where you sleep in Navy bunks and eat from the chow line.

That gives Camden an unusually good two-stop combination:

  • Morning: sharks
  • Afternoon: battleship

Why it pairs so well: Both sit on the Camden waterfront, far easier to combine than stops in different parts of the state.

5. Walk Into the Artwork at Grounds For Sculpture

Hamilton | Give it: 2 to 3 hours | Best for: an unhurried afternoon

Grounds For Sculpture solves a problem conventional art museums cannot: you can walk around the art. The park sets sculpture across landscaped outdoor spaces, so the visit feels more like exploring than filing from gallery A to gallery B.

Why it’s different: Turn down the path that looks interesting, find the work hidden beyond the trees, and stop when something catches your eye.

The Useful 2026 Detail

Entry is by timed ticket, worth reserving ahead because capacity is limited and a slot sold out online is sold out onsite too.

Current adult admission is $25, with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hours until 9 p.m. Through September 4, the 2026 anniversary offer drops Friday admission after 5 p.m. to $5.

Prices and hours checked August 2026; confirm your date before booking.

Don’t Try to Turn the Five Into One Route

These places do not belong on one heroic day. They pull in three directions, and how you get around matters once the stops sit an hour or two apart, so pick a region first and let it shape the outing.

  • North Jersey: Choose Sterling Hill or Lakota Wolf Preserve as the main event rather than forcing both into the same day.
  • Camden: Adventure Aquarium + Battleship New Jersey is the cleanest pairing because both offer full, completely different experiences in the same city.
  • Central Jersey: Give Grounds For Sculpture its own afternoon and resist adding another major stop just because the day still has time left.

Let the Weird One Win

Which one made you stop scrolling? If it was the glowing mine, go underground. If it was four wolf packs, book Lakota. If “bridge over sharks” settled it instantly, Camden has your answer.

A good New Jersey day does not need to prove how much of the state you saw. Sometimes it just needs one story nobody expected you to come home with.
